Changes to the school immunization requirements.

The New York Court of Appeals has upheld the New York City (NYC) Health Code flu vaccine requirement for children attending childcare and preschool. All children 6 months through 59 months of age enrolled in NYC-regulated childcare programs, including Head Start, Nursery, and public or non-public Pre-K and 3-K, must receive at least one dose of influenza vaccine between July 1st and December 31st of each year. Although some children may need a second flu vaccine dose in accordance with Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations, the second dose is not required for childcare or pre-school attendance. Please take the childcare flu vaccine mandate into consideration when ordering your Vaccines for Children (VFC) and privately purchased flu vaccines.

The 2018-19 school year medical and immunization requirements have been posted at https://www.schools.nyc.gov/school-life/health-and-wellness/immunizations.We would like to remind you of the following changes for the upcoming year: students entering 7th, 8th, and 9th grades will need to have had one dose of meningococcal quadrivalent conjugate vaccine (MenACWY), while students entering 12th grade will continue to need two doses, unless their first dose was at 16 years of age or older. The final dose of MenACWY must have been given on or after the 16th birthday. If two doses of MenACWY were given prior to age 16, a third dose will be required.  Students entering grades K-4 and 6-10 will be required to have had 2 doses of varicella vaccine and 4 doses of polio vaccine, unless the 3rd dose of polio vaccine was received at 4 years of age or older, in which case only 3 doses are required.

For questions on the flu vaccine mandate, other vaccine requirements for childcare or school, flu vaccine ordering, or any other vaccine-related issue, please contact us at (347) 396-2400 or email us at nycimmunize@health.nyc.gov. We thank you for helping to keep NYC children protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.
